Religious denomination in the teacher training degree programs in religion
The Universität Hamburg currently offers degree components for four religions:
- Alevi religion within the degree program Teacher Training for Primary Schools
- Protestant religion within the degree programs Teacher Training for Primary Schools, Teacher Training for Secondary Schools, Teacher Training in Special Needs Education for Primary Schools and Teacher Training in Special Needs Education for Secondary Schools
- Islamic religion within the degree program Teacher Training for Primary Schools
- Catholic religion within the degree program Teacher Training for Primary Schools
The Ministry of School and Vocational Education and the religious communities responsible for religious education in Hamburg advise applicants must belong to and be qualified in the denomination they belong and they wish to teach in order to be accepted for a teaching practice period (Vorbereitungsdienst). The same applies to teachers currently teaching or intending to teach religion. In the future, individuals will not be accepted to a teaching practice period (Vorbereitungsdienst) for religion or hired to teach religion in Hamburg without proof of having been commissioned by a religious community. For further information on the current regulations, visit the Ministry of School and Vocational Education website.
Students whose denomination does not coincide with their chosen teaching subject may find relevant information by searching the keyword “Übergangsregelungen” (transitional arrangements) on the Vereinigung der Hamburger Religionslehrerinnen und -lehrer (association of Hamburg religion teachers) website.
