Teacher training degree programs
Universität Hamburg offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in teacher training.
Since Winter Semester 2020/21, the first phase of teacher training (university phase) in Hamburg has been providing 5 different undergraduate degree programs. To earn a bachelor of education (BEd), students must first complete a 6-semester bachelor’s degree program (8 semesters for the teaching subjects visual arts or music in the Teacher Training for Secondary Schools or Teacher Training in Special Needs Education for Secondary Schools programs). Students must then complete a 4-semester master’s degree program to earn a master of education (MEd), which allows them to apply for the teaching practice period (Vorbereitungsdienst, the 2nd phase) in any federal state of Germany.
The new master’s degree programs in teacher training start in Winter Semester 2023/24. This ensures that graduates of the new bachelor's degree programs in teacher training who completed their bachelor studies in the standard period of study can continue their studies in the corresponding new master's degree program in teacher training
Special information for graduates of bachelor's programs in Hamburg who started their teacher training degree programs up to and including Winter Semester 2019/20 (in German only).

Structure of the degree program
Students first complete a 3-year bachelor’s degree program and then a 2-year master’s degree program, for which they earn a bachelor of education (BEd) and master of education (MEd), respectively. - Students must choose a third teaching subject as an elective subject from: Alevi religion, visual arts,* English, music,* Protestant religion, Islamic religion, Catholic religion, sports, and general studies in primary education
*The teaching subjects music and visual arts are an exception. Visual arts or music are studied as a double subject with a total of 104 ECTS credits (including 20 ECTS credits for subject-specific didactics) and can only be combined with German or mathematics. This does not result in an extension of the regular period of study. - One of the 3 teaching subjects is a specialization subject in the master’s degree program with a total of 15 ECTS credits.
- The degree component Educational Science also includes the subject-specific didactics of the teaching subjects and the teaching placements.

Supplementary studies for graduates who earned their teacher training degree abroad
Please note:As a result of the Reform of Teacher Education and the transition to reformed teacher training degree programs, the last admission to Supplementary Studies for applicants with a determination of equivalence for Teacher Training in Primary and Lower Secondary Education (LAPS) took place in Winter Semester 2020/21. Prospective students with a determination of equivalence for this teaching qualification should contact Jonathan Müller at the Hamburg Center for Teacher Education (ZLH) for personal consultation. |
Program goal
Supplementary Studies are aimed at people who have already received a teaching qualification abroad or in their country of origin and who are seeking full recognition for working as a teacher in Germany in accordance with §§ 9 ff HmbBQFG in conjunction with § 3 HmbBQFUG-Lehramt.
Information on the recognition procedure can be found on the website of the Hamburg Ministry of School and Vocational Education.
The program comprises one further teaching subject if the teaching degree obtained abroad includes only one teaching subject, or if only one teaching subject has been recognized as equivalent by the school authorities.
Supplementary Studies may be taken for the following types of teaching qualification:
- Teacher Training for Primary Schools (LAGS)
- Teacher Training in Special Needs Education for Primary School (LAS-G)
- Teacher Training in Special Needs Education for Secondary School (LAS-Sek)
- Teacher Training for Secondary Schools (LASek)
- Teacher Training in Vocational Education (LAB)
Program structure
For graduates of a teaching degree program completed abroad, admission to Supplementary Studies is offered every winter semester starting on October 1st.
The following subjects can be studied as part of the Supplementary Studies at the faculties of Universität Hamburg and the collaborating public universities.

*In addition to the corresponding subject didactics totaling 20 ECTS credits, when qualifying for LAGS one supplementary module in subject didactics at primary level (mathematics or language) must usually be studied and when qualifying for LAS both modules in subject didactics at primary level (mathematics and language) must be studied.
In Hamburg, 30 ECTS credits correspond to one semester of full-time study. Even in a full-time study program students should expect to study for at least 2 years, depending on the courses offered in the respective semesters.
Supplementary Studies are modularized, i.e. examinations are taken throughout the program. There is neither a bachelor's nor a master's final examination. Internships are not completed during the program.
After successful completion, you will receive a certificate, a diploma supplement and a transcript of records which are valid in conjunction with the university degree obtained abroad. Since a further degree will not be awarded, you will not receive a diploma. Information on how to apply for the documents can be found below.
Please also note the examination regulations (in German only) for this interdisciplinary teacher training program.
Admission requirements for Supplementary Studies
- proof of teacher training qualification earned abroad
- proof of determination of equivalence of teaching qualification abroad issued by a German educational authority
- proof of German Language Proficiency equivalent to level C1 accepted by Universität Hamburg
- Some teaching subjects have special conditions for admission: aptitude test for sport; language skills for English, French, Spanish and further subjects.
Supplementary Studies start each winter semester, and the application period runs from 1 June to 15 July.
Program completion
After having successfully completed all required study achievements and examinations, please use the application form to request the preparation of your certificate documents. The completed form can be mailed or submitted to your examination officer during office hours. Alternatively, you can fill out the form online and send it as an email attachment to the Central Examination Office for Teacher Training (ZPLA). If you have any questions, please contact the ZPLA using the contact form.
It takes about 6 weeks to prepare the certificate, diploma supplement and transcript of records. You will already receive a record of grades in advance which you can submit to the Hamburg Ministry of School and Vocational Education together with your proof of determination of equivalence.
After the successful completion of Supplementary Studies, graduates usually apply for the Adjustment Qualification (Anpassungsqualifizierung).
